Portuguese hotels clinch Condé Nast award
Five Portuguese hotels have this week been distinguished with the Condé Nast Johansens 2015 award for excellence for establishments in European and the Mediterranean, from sixteen categories and beating off competition from some of the world’s leading establishments.
During the awards ceremony, which took place at the historic MayFair Hotel in London on Monday night, five Portuguese establishments scooped titles including those of ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Dining Experience’.
The accolade of Best Newcomer went to Casa da Calçada in Amarante, northern Portugal, which was nominated for its “scenic location, cosy, elegant, and romantic interior and excellent cuisine” as well as for being a “nirvana for avid foodies and Port-loving oenophiles.”
Another northern hotel, the Yeatman Hotel, in Oporto, won the gong for ‘Best Dining Experience’ in recognition of its “excellent Michelin-Starred restaurant with breathtaking views over the Douro River and old city of Porto”, while the Myriad by SANA Hotels, in Lisbon, was given the award for ‘Best for Meetings’.
The Epic Sana Lisboa and Epic Sana Algarve Hotel, in Albufeira, were both winners of the ‘Readers Award’.
Nine other Portuguese hotels were shortlisted for a range of awards, including Vidago Palace, which was in the running for ‘Best Hotel with Spa’ and was pipped to the post by the Hotel Botânico & The Oriental Spa Garden, in Tenerife.
Lisbon’s Hotel Palácio Estoril, Golf & Spa was shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Best for Weddings, Parties or Special Events’, but that title went to the Palazzo Magnani Feroni – all-suites in Florence, Tuscany, Italy.
The Condé Nast Johansens awards are based on client reviews and in-situ inspections.
